Mobile locksmith service
Bardon
A renovation changes the doors before anyone thinks about the locks. By the time a new door is hung, the existing hardware may no longer fit, line up, or suit what the room is being used for.

Start with what changed
What has changed about the door?
Locks, latches and key systems are all affected when a door is replaced, widened, re-hung or turned around. What matters is whether the hardware you have can follow it.
What should I tell the locksmith?
Describe the property, the doors involved, what the key or lock is doing and who needs access. You do not need to identify the lock type yourself.
Repair, rekey or replace?
The right path depends on whether the hardware is still serviceable, whether old keys must stop working and whether the current lock still suits the door.

A new door in an old frame
The existing lock does not fit
New doors are rarely prepared identically to the ones they replace, so mortices, backsets and edge profiles all shift. The lock and the door are measured together rather than assumed to match.
The practical next stepHardware that fits the door actually there.
Re-hung or re-aligned doors
The door closes differently now
Once hinges are adjusted, a door can sit a few millimetres from where it did before, which is enough to upset a latch. Alignment is settled so the lock is not blamed for a moving door.
The practical next stepA door that latches without being forced.
Renovated rooms, new uses
The room now needs different access
A study, a space let out or a workshop door may need a keyed lock, an internal catch or a second locking point where it previously needed none. That begins as a question about use, not hardware.
The practical next stepHardware matched to how the room is used.
Local service planning
Bardon renovations and existing hardware
Bardon is postcode 4065. When an existing door sits alongside a newly fitted one, the lock decision is about more than appearance: the door preparation, latch position and existing key system all need to be considered.
Old doors, new doors, one house
A renovated home frequently carries original timber doors alongside new ones, so each opening has to be assessed on its own rather than treated as a single type.
Latches and strikers after re-hanging
When a door is re-hung or its frame altered, the striker position moves with it. Latch and striker alignment is the first thing to check after any joinery work, before the lock is suspected.
Key systems across a growing home
An extension or a converted room adds another external door, and the question of whether it joins the existing key set or stands alone on its own key comes up at that point.

What happens next
From building work to working locks
- 01 / Step
Say what has been changed
Describe the new or altered door, what was done to the frame or hinges, and what the room is used for. The history of an opening explains most of the fit problems.
- 02 / Step
Measure the door and the hardware
The door, frame and any existing lock are assessed together, so replacement hardware suits the opening that exists rather than the one it replaced.
- 03 / Step
Fit, adjust and test
Suitable hardware is installed or the existing lock refitted, then the door is checked open and shut so the latch, striker and lock all work together.
Useful guidance
Getting the locks right during building work
Involve the locks before the door is finished
Where the hardware choice is made while a door is still being fitted, backsets and mortices can be prepared to suit it. Decisions made after the door is hung tend to narrow the options and add a second round of work on a door that was already finished.
Expect the old lock not to fit the new door
New doors and old locks rarely line up exactly, and that is not a fault in either of them. Measuring both and then choosing is far quicker than trying to make a mismatched pair work together through force.
Keep the key system in view
Every new external door is a chance to decide whether it joins the household key set or stands alone. Adding it thoughtfully at the time avoids a separate key later that nobody wants to carry and everybody leaves behind.
Useful answers
Bardon locksmith questions.
If your situation is different, tell us what changed and what you need the doors or keys to do.
Can my old lock be reused on a new door?
Sometimes, if the door has been prepared to suit it. New doors are often cut differently, in which case the lock is changed rather than forced into an opening it was not made for.
The door no longer closes properly after re-hanging
That is usually latch and striker alignment rather than a fault in the lock. Adjusting the striker or the hinges normally restores it.
Do French doors need a special lock?
They need hardware that secures both leaves together, which differs from a single door. The opening and the meeting edge are checked before anything is chosen.
My renovation added a new external door
It can be included in the household key set where the locks allow it, or kept separate. It is worth deciding before the hardware is chosen.
Should internal doors be keyed during a renovation?
Only where the room's use calls for it, such as a home office or a space being let out. That is a question about how you plan to use the room.
