Mobile locksmith service
Ascot
Moving into a home means living with locks that were chosen by someone else, and with however many copies of the keys were made along the way. The sensible starting point is what can be kept and what should be reset.

Start with what changed
What should happen to keys you did not cut?
A handover rarely comes with a full account of the keys. The decisions that follow are about the existing hardware, not about replacing it by default.
What should I tell the locksmith?
Describe the property, the doors involved, what the key or lock is doing and who needs access. You do not need to identify the lock type yourself.
Repair, rekey or replace?
The right path depends on whether the hardware is still serviceable, whether old keys must stop working and whether the current lock still suits the door.

Unknown copies
You cannot say who holds a key
Sales agents, trades, cleaners, family and previous occupants can each end up with a copy that nobody is tracking. Rekeying the entry doors closes that gap while leaving hardware that is already working where it is.
The practical next stepKeys operating the doors are the ones you issued.
Existing hardware
The locks are sound but unfamiliar
Older inner-city homes often carry well-made locks that have simply been in place for decades. Those are adjusted and rekeyed rather than pulled out, because good hardware tends to wear better than a cheap replacement.

Adding to what is there
One door needs more than the others
A side or rear door may call for a lock that matches the style and function of the existing set. The door and current hardware are checked first so anything added works alongside them rather than against them.
The practical next stepConsistent hardware across the entry.
Local service planning
Ascot homes and handover questions
Ascot is postcode 4007. A change of ownership is a useful point to review the locks already fitted, the keys in circulation and whether each exterior door still suits the way the property is used.
Timber doors and established hardware
Good timber doors hold older locks well, and original hardware can often be adjusted rather than replaced. Repeated force on a heavy door is what damages these entries, more than age on its own.
Multiple entries on one property
Larger homes often have several external doors plus a gate, so a handover means deciding which of them should share a key and which are better kept separate.
Keys held by services and trades
Cleaners, gardeners and trades who worked at the property before a move may still hold keys. It is a normal part of a handover and is settled by rekeying the doors that matter.

What happens next
Settling the locks after a handover
- 01 / Step
Walk the doors and the keys
Note each external door, what hardware it carries and which keys you were given. Any gap between the two is the starting point for the visit.
- 02 / Step
Assess what should stay
Existing locks are examined for condition and quality, since good hardware is worth keeping and it may only be the keyed part that needs attention.
- 03 / Step
Reset and test the entry
The agreed work is carried out and each door is tested, so the completed key set matches the property rather than the previous occupant of it.
Useful guidance
Making a handover straightforward
Reset the keyed parts, not the whole door
A handover does not require new locks on every door. Changing or rekeying the cylinder resets who can enter while the rest of a sound lock, and the door itself, stays untouched. On older timber entries that difference matters, because the door often will not take a new lock without preparation.
Keep hardware that still has life in it
Established locks on inner-city homes are frequently better made than their modern equivalents. Where the mechanism is sound, cleaning, adjusting and rekeying it will outlast a cheap replacement, and it preserves the appearance of an entry that has been part of the house since it was built.
Decide the key system deliberately
Once you know which doors exist, choose whether they share a key or stay separate. Doing that early means any later addition matches the set, instead of introducing a door on a key of its own that nobody wants to carry.
Useful answers
Ascot locksmith questions.
If your situation is different, tell us what changed and what you need the doors or keys to do.
Should I change the locks when I move in?
Not necessarily. If the existing locks are in good order, rekeying resets the keys without replacing hardware. Where a lock is worn or unsuitable, replacement makes more sense.
Can old locks be rekeyed?
Usually, if the cylinder is serviceable. Older, well-made locks often rekey cleanly, and they tend to wear better than inexpensive replacements.
How do I know whether a key has been copied?
You generally cannot tell, which is why a handover prompts a reset. Rekeying removes the question entirely, because copies stop operating the lock.
Can I add a lock that matches the others?
Yes, where the door and the existing hardware allow it. The current set is checked first so anything added works with what is already in place.
What about keys held by a property manager?
Those arrangements are usually agreed with the manager. If access needs to change, the locks on the relevant doors can be reset and the new keys issued deliberately.
