Locksmith Services North Brisbane
Master keying. North Brisbane.
Too many keys on too many rings. Master keying plans which key opens which door across a site, so a manager carries one key while everyone else carries only what their role actually needs.

Start with the outcome
What should each key open?
A master key system is really a set of decisions about access. The doors, the roles people hold and the hardware already fitted determine how simple or layered the system should be.
What this service helps you decide
Start with who needs to go where. A master key system is designed around the doors on a site and the people who use them, not picked off a shelf. Tell us how many doors are involved, who needs access to which areas, and whether the site is expected to change or expand.
Tell us what you need →What should I mention first?
Tell us the suburb, the door or access point involved, what has changed and the result you need. That gives us a useful starting point without asking you to diagnose the hardware.

One person, most of the doors
A single master key
The person who needs to move through the whole site carries one key that opens every door on the system, instead of a heavy bunch. Individual doors can still be keyed separately for the people who only need those areas.
The outcomeOne key to manage at the top level, with the rest of the site still separately keyed.
Different people, different areas
Access levels by area
Where a cleaner should open the front entrance but not the office, or a supervisor also needs the store room, the system is built in levels so each key opens its own set. Levels are set by what each role must be able to reach.
The outcomeEvery key holder can reach their own areas and no more, without extra keys to manage.
Keys that should not be copied freely
Restricted keyways
Restricted keys carry a controlled profile, so copies are not cut without authorisation through the registered owner of the system. That control suits sites where key duplication has become difficult to track.
The outcomeTighter control over who can order keys, and a clearer record when new keys are issued.

What happens next
From first enquiry to a working system
- 01 / Step
List the doors and the roles
Note every door that should be on the system and who needs to open it. Include shared entrances, store rooms, offices, tenancies and any door that should deliberately stay off the system.
- 02 / Step
Plan the key levels
The doors are grouped into access levels and the keying is planned to match. Existing hardware, keyways and any restricted profile already in use all feed into what is practical.
- 03 / Step
Key and fit the doors
Locks are prepared or changed so the system works door by door, and each key is cut for its own level. Aim to work through the site without leaving an entrance unlocked for more than the job requires.
- 04 / Step
Walk through the system together
Each key is tried against the doors it should open, and the way the levels sit together is explained. Ask how keys are ordered, how many spares are held and what happens if one goes missing.
Useful guidance
Before a master key system
Planning the levels
A master key system works more reliably when it is planned before locks are bought. Work out which roles exist on the site, what each role genuinely needs to open, and which areas should stay limited to a few people. Level design should also allow for a person's access to be reduced when their role changes, without rebuilding the whole system. Write the plan down as a list of doors against roles, and keep it with the key records, so the next change can be made without starting again.
Keys, custody and changes
Decide where master keys live and who signs them out. A master key that cannot be accounted for puts every door on the system at risk, and the doors that key opened become the starting point for any rekeying. Where key holders change often, restricted keyways and issued-key records help keep track of what was cut and when. Existing locks can often be brought onto a new system, but mixed brands and older hardware may need to be changed for the levels to work as intended.
Useful answers
Master Keying questions.
If your situation is different, describe the property, door and outcome in the enquiry form.
Can my existing locks be used in a master key system?
Sometimes. The locks need to be compatible with each other and in serviceable condition before they can be brought onto one system. Sites with a mix of brands, ages and keyways often need some hardware changed so the levels work as designed.
What happens if a master key is lost?
The doors that missing key opened are the starting point. Depending on the risk, some or all of the system may need rekeying so the lost key no longer works, and the access levels can be reviewed at the same time. Report a missing master key as soon as it is noticed, rather than waiting for the next routine change.
Can the system grow later?
Often, where the locks and keyway allow it. Additional doors can be keyed into an existing system as a site changes, and compatibility is checked before anything new is added. A system planned with spare capacity is easier to extend than one built door by door.
How many keys should each person have?
That is a decision for the owner or manager of the site, based on what each role needs to open. Work out the roles first, issue keys to match those roles, and keep a written record of who holds what so access can be adjusted later.
When can a master key system be planned?
Appointments and site visits are available Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm. Call during those hours or send an enquiry with the site address, an outline of the doors involved and a note of the roles that need different levels of access.
