Start with the symptom
What is your
lock doing?
Choose the closest description. It helps explain the problem; the door and lock still need to be checked together.
Can’t secure the door?
Mention that when you call during business hours. Don’t force the key or assume a faulty door has locked.
The key sticks or grinds
A worn key, a problem inside the cylinder, or pressure from the door can feel similar. Tell us whether all keys behave the same way and whether the change was sudden or gradual. Stop trying a key that resists turning.
Ask about a sticking key →The door needs lifting or pushing
The latch may be rubbing against the strike, or the door may have moved in its frame. Hinges, alignment and fixings need attention too. A new lock alone may not solve a door that binds.
Describe your door problem →The handle moves, but the latch doesn’t
A loose or dropping handle can point to the connection between the handle and lock body, or the latch mechanism itself. The handle, latch and any separate deadlock should be assessed together.
Ask about a handle or latch →Keep what works. Change what needs to.
Repair, rekey
or replace?
A faulty lock and a missing key are different problems. The condition of the hardware and who should have access guide the choice.
For a lock that isn’t working properly
Repair
Keep usable hardware and address the fault: a loose fixing, shifted mounting, friction or a serviceable worn component.
The aimSmooth, dependable operation without replacing sound parts unnecessarily.
For a change in who has access
Rekey
Change which keys operate a compatible, working lock. Useful when keys are missing or a property changes hands.
The differenceThe hardware stays, but the keying changes. Rekeying is not a cure for a faulty mechanism.
For damaged or unsuitable hardware
Replace
Consider a new lock when parts are badly worn, damaged or unavailable, or the existing lock no longer suits the door.
Before you decideCheck the door alignment too. Misalignment alone doesn’t automatically mean a new lock.
Need to keep one key for several doors? Mention it before work is agreed. Compatibility and the condition of the existing locks affect the options.

From first call to final check
A clear next step.
- 01 / Describe
Tell us the problem
Share the suburb, door type, symptoms and whether it can be secured. Confirm access and who can authorise the work.
- 02 / Assess
Check the whole door
We look at the key, handle, latch, frame and fixings to separate a lock fault from alignment trouble.
- 03 / Agree
Choose the work
Discuss repair, rekeying or replacement as appropriate. Repair proceeds on site where parts and conditions allow.
- 04 / Test
Check operation
The lock is tested with the door open and closed. Ask about maintenance and any remaining wear in the hardware.
Ask what the proposed work includes and whether parts need to be ordered. If the required work changes, clarify the revised scope before authorising it.
While you arrange a visit
A little preparation helps.
Observe. Don’t dismantle.
- Note where the key catches and whether the door needs lifting or pushing.
- With safe access maintained, look for an obviously loose handle or a latch rubbing the frame.
- Have the affected keys ready and clear the doorway for assessment.
Don’t force a resistant key, repeatedly test faulty hardware or risk locking yourself outside. A bent or snapped key adds another problem. Keep a safe access route available.
Rentals & managed properties
Tenants should check with the property manager or landlord before booking. For shared doors, confirm who is authorised to arrange the work.
Property managers: have the address, reported symptom and access arrangements ready. Mention master-key systems or building-managed entry hardware before changes are made.
For location-specific access and rekeying guidance, see our Chermside locksmith service page.
Fire and exit doors: don’t alter closers, panic hardware or exit latches, and don’t prop open fire doors. These doors have requirements that general repair advice cannot cover.
A few useful answers
Before you book.
Not sure which option fits? Describe the symptoms first. An on-site assessment may still be needed.
Ask about your lock →What affects the cost of a repair?
The lock type, fault, access and availability of parts all matter. Repair, rekeying and replacement involve different work. Mention every affected door so the scope can be discussed before work starts.
Will my existing keys still work?
A straightforward repair normally keeps the existing keying. Rekeying deliberately changes it. Some replacement locks can match existing keys; others cannot. Tell us if keeping one key across the property matters.
Can a seized lock be repaired?
Sometimes. Dirt, corrosion and failed components can cause similar symptoms but need different solutions. Repair may suit usable parts; significant damage or unavailable components can make replacement more practical.
What about screen or security door locks?
Tell us the door type and any visible make or model. These locks vary, so an on-site check may be needed to establish the options. Not every unit is repairable.
How long will a repair last?
It depends on the remaining wear and how the door is used. A busy shop door is different from a rarely used entry. Ask about the condition of the other components and maintenance suited to the lock.
