Start with the outcome
Which property task is in front of you?
Rental work is driven by dates and handovers. What separates the options is whether the keys need to change, whether the hardware itself needs attention, or whether access simply has to be issued and taken back cleanly.
What this service helps you decide
Start with the property and the point it has reached. Whether a rental is between tenants, a sale is settling or a portfolio needs standardising, the question is usually who should hold a key now. Tell us the address, the doors involved and what has changed since the last keys were issued.
Tell us what you need →What should I mention first?
Tell us the suburb, the door or access point involved, what has changed and the result you need. That gives us a useful starting point without asking you to diagnose the hardware.

Between one tenancy and the next
Rekey or change the locks
Returned keys do not show how many copies were cut. Rekeying stops the previous keys from operating the entry doors while keeping serviceable hardware, and locks are replaced where they are worn, damaged or unsuitable for the next tenancy.
The outcomeA property handed over with only the new keys working.
Managing more than one property
Standardise the keying
Where a portfolio uses the same key systems, keys are easier to issue, record and replace when a manager or regular tradesperson changes. Mixed hardware across properties is what makes key control difficult.
The outcomeFewer key types to manage, and clearer records across the properties you look after.
Access during a sale, lease or repair
Control temporary access
Where trades, agents or prospective tenants need entry, decide which credential each person holds and how it is returned at the end. Temporary access that is issued without a record is what leaves owners unsure who can still get in.
The outcomeAccess that can be withdrawn when the arrangement ends, without rekeying the whole property.

What happens next
From booking to key handover
- 01 / Step
List the properties and doors
Note the addresses, the entry doors involved and whether any shared or common doors are included. Mention any property that has to be completed in the same visit, so the trip can be planned around it.
- 02 / Step
Confirm access and authority
Say who can approve the work, who will be on site and how entry will be arranged. For units and shared buildings, confirm whether the body corporate or building manager also needs to be involved.
- 03 / Step
Complete the work
The agreed doors are rekeyed, changed or supplied with new hardware. Existing keys are tested against the new keying before the property is left, so nothing from the previous tenancy still operates the entry.
- 04 / Step
Hand over the keys
The keys issued are counted and noted for your records, with spares kept where you decide. Ask what the property manager should have ready, so the next handover runs smoothly.
Useful guidance
Working with rentals
Between tenancies
The gap between one tenancy and the next is the most practical time for lock work, because the property is empty and the job does not disturb anyone. Plan the doors you want changed, decide how many keys the next tenancy receives and whether any hardware should be replaced while the property is vacant. Note anything found during the previous tenancy, such as a sticking lock or a door that needed lifting, and have it assessed rather than rekeyed, because a key change will not repair a worn mechanism and the fault will still be there for the next tenant. Where a property is being prepared for sale or a new lease, the same vacant window can be used to deal with a door that has been awkward for a while, rather than leaving it for the next occupant to report.
Owners, tenants and shared buildings
Authorisation matters as much as the work itself. Tenants should clear the decision with the property manager or owner before arranging anything, and units and shared buildings often need the body corporate or building manager involved for common doors. Owners should decide in advance how many keys a tenancy receives and in what form, so the keys can be cut with the job rather than ordered afterwards. Do not send key safe combinations or alarm codes by message. Provide access arrangements in person or through the property manager when the booking is confirmed. Where a property sits inside a larger building, check whether the entry door is common property before assuming the work is the owner's to arrange.
Useful answers
Real Estate Solutions questions.
If your situation is different, describe the property, door and outcome in the enquiry form.
Should locks be rekeyed or changed between tenants?
Rekeying is usually the smaller job where the locks are compatible and in serviceable condition, because the hardware stays in place and only the keying changes. Locks are replaced where they are worn, damaged or no longer suitable for the door, and the condition is assessed before a method is confirmed.
Who should approve locksmith work on a rental?
The owner, or the person acting on the owner's behalf such as the property manager. Tenants should check before arranging anything, and shared or common doors usually need the body corporate or building manager involved as well.
How many keys should a tenancy receive?
That is an agreement between the owner, the manager and the tenants, and it is worth recording. Decide the number before the work is booked so the keys are cut with the job, rather than ordered separately afterwards.
Can a tenant ask for the locks to be changed?
A tenant can raise the request, but the property manager or owner normally arranges and authorises the work. Where the entry is shared, the building's own arrangements may also apply, so the request may need to go through the body corporate as well. Where security is a concern, the request should still go through the manager or owner so access and approval can be sorted out together.
When can a rental property be attended?
Rental properties are attended Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm. Call during those hours or send an enquiry with the address, the doors involved and the access arrangements, and confirm who can authorise the work before the booking is made.
