Mobile locksmith service
Brighton
An entry can involve two doors working together: the main door and the screen or security door in front of it. When one needs lifting, pushing or holding shut, the apparent lock problem may begin with door alignment.

Start with what changed
What is the entry actually doing wrong?
Locks get the blame for problems that begin at the latch, the striker or the hinge. Sorting out which part is failing is the difference between a repair and a replacement.
What should I tell the locksmith?
Describe the property, the doors involved, what the key or lock is doing and who needs access. You do not need to identify the lock type yourself.
Repair, rekey or replace?
The right path depends on whether the hardware is still serviceable, whether old keys must stop working and whether the current lock still suits the door.

Latch alignment
The door has to be lifted or pushed to lock
When a latch misses the striker, hands adapt and the door gets a shoulder or a lift every time. Adjusting the striker, the hinges or the latch itself usually restores the door without touching the lock, which matters because forcing a door wears the lock prematurely.
The practical next stepA door that closes and locks without being coaxed.
Screen and security doors
The outer door has given up first
Screen doors take more use and more knocks than the main door behind them. Latches, strikers and closing mechanisms wear, so the screen door is the part that fails first even when the main lock is perfectly sound.
The practical next stepBoth doors on the opening working again.
Key control
Too many keys are still out there
Spare keys left with neighbours, trades or a previous occupant turn into unexplained copies. Rekeying the entry locks retires them all at once while the locks and the doors stay exactly as they are.
The practical next stepThe keys you know about are the only ones working.

Brighton entry doors and hardware
Brighton is postcode 4017 and sits inside the area served from Chermside West. The property type and who controls each door matter: a private home entrance, a unit door and common-property access can require different approval and hardware decisions.
Doors that drag or need a push
A door that has moved on its hinges is the most common reason a latch stops lining up. The movement is usually small and the fix is usually at the striker or hinge rather than the lock.
Two doors on one opening
Where a screen or security door sits in front of the main door, both need to close cleanly for the entry to work. Sorting the outer door first often removes the pressure that was wearing the main lock.
Hardware on the outside face
Handles, cylinders and fixings on the outdoor side take the weather along with the use. Loose fixings and stiff mechanisms are worth addressing while the door is being looked at, rather than waiting for a failure.

Service option
Screen Door Repairs
Latches, strikers, closers and alignment on screen and security doors. These are the parts that wear first on an entry, because the outer door is the one the household actually uses.

Lock Repairs
Stiff cylinders, loose handles and mechanisms that have been forced past a bad latch. Repairing the lock is straightforward once the door itself closes where it should.

Deadlocks
An additional locking point on an entry door, added alongside the existing latch rather than replacing it. Worth considering where the latch alone is doing all the work.

Keyless Entry
Code or credential entry on a door where a shared key keeps being passed around. It removes the copy problem from the entry altogether.

What happens next
From a door that sticks to an entry that works
- 01 / Step
Describe how the entry behaves
Say whether the door needs lifting, whether the screen door closes on its own, which door the key belongs to and when it last worked. A photo of the lock edge helps before the visit.
- 02 / Step
Check the doors and the hardware together
The screen door, the main door, the frame and the striker are looked at as one assembly. That is how the actual cause is separated from the lock, which is usually the part being blamed.
- 03 / Step
Adjust, repair or replace as agreed
Alignment is corrected where that is the fault, then the lock or latch is repaired or replaced. Both doors are tested open and shut before the entry is handed back.
Useful guidance
Getting an entry door working properly
Fix the alignment before the lock
A latch that has to be forced wears the lock's internal parts far sooner than normal use would. Adjusting the striker or the hinges so the latch enters cleanly is what protects the lock, and it is often the whole repair. Replacing a lock on a door that will not line up simply repeats the problem.
Repair the screen door or replace it
Latches, strikers and closing hardware are replaceable, so a screen door that has stopped catching is usually a repair rather than a new door. Replacement comes into it when the frame or door itself has failed, which is a different conversation from lock work.
Handles, cylinders and the outdoor face
The outer side of an entry takes the weather and the use, so fixings work loose and mechanisms stiffen over time. Tightening loose fixings and freeing a stiff cylinder while the door is already open saves a return visit, and it is the moment to replace a worn handle.
Useful answers
Brighton locksmith questions.
If your situation is different, tell us what changed and what you need the doors or keys to do.
Why does my front door need lifting to lock?
The latch and striker have moved out of line, usually because the door has shifted on its hinges or the striker has been knocked about. Adjusting the alignment normally fixes it, and better now than after the lock wears from being forced.
Can the latch be adjusted without replacing the lock?
Often, yes. If the lock is sound and the problem is alignment, the door, striker or hinges are adjusted and the existing lock stays. Replacement only comes into it when the lock itself is damaged or worn.
Is the screen door lock separate from the main lock?
Usually it is a separate latch with its own key or catch. The two doors are independent parts of the same opening, which is why one can fail while the other still works perfectly.
Should I add a deadlock to the entry?
Where a single latch is the only thing securing the entry, a deadlock adds a second locking point without removing the latch. It is worth discussing at the same time as any repair, so the door is prepared once.
What if the striker plate looks worn?
A worn striker is common on a door in daily use, and it can be replaced or repositioned as part of the alignment work. Mention it when booking so the right parts come along.
