Start with the outcome

Where is the door failing someone?

Accessible hardware solves an operation problem rather than a security problem. Start with what makes the door difficult, because that decides whether the lock is changed, repositioned or added to alongside the door itself.

What this service helps you decide

Make an entry easier to operate for someone with limited grip, strength or reach.

What should I mention first?

Tell us the suburb, the door or access point involved, what has changed and the result you need. That gives us a useful starting point without asking you to diagnose the hardware.

Choose the right path

Where is the door failing someone?

Accessible hardware solves an operation problem rather than a security problem. Start with what makes the door difficult, because that decides whether the lock is changed, repositioned or added to alongside the door itself.

Hard to turn

The key or knob needs a firm grip

Round knobs, small keys and stiff mechanisms are difficult to use with a weak grip or an unsteady hand. A lever handle, an easier-turning cylinder or a keypad can remove most of the effort involved. The door still needs to be checked, because a binding door adds resistance of its own and no handle can fix that.

The outcome

Less force needed to open and lock the door.

Hard to reach

The lock sits where someone cannot comfortably get to it

Height, approach and whether the door must be pulled while a key turns all matter. A wheelchair, a walking frame or a seated user changes what actually works in practice. Sometimes the hardware is repositioned, and sometimes the door or the approach to it is what has to change.

The outcome

Hardware reachable from the position the user is in.

Planned work

The door is being built, replaced or renovated

Choosing hardware before a door is hung avoids awkward retrofits later. Tell us who will use the door, how often and whether they will be alone when they do. A new door can be prepared for lever, keypad or keyless hardware from the beginning rather than being altered once it is finished.

The outcome

Hardware decided before the opening is completed.

  1. 01 / Step

    Describe the difficulty

Explain who uses the door and what they struggle with, whether that is turning, gripping, reaching or pulling. Mention the door type and whether the property is a house, unit or workplace.

  2. 02 / Step

    Check the door in use

We look at how the door actually operates, including any step or lip, the swing, the weight and whether the door binds. Resistance coming from the door has to be separated from resistance inside the lock.

  3. 03 / Step

    Match hardware to the user

Lever handles, keypad entry and keyless locks suit different users. Discuss keys, who needs access and how the property is locked at night before any work is agreed or ordered.

  4. 04 / Step

    Test with the person

The finished door is tested by the person who will use it, not only by the locksmith. Ask about grip, reach and whether they can manage the door on their own, and raise anything that still feels awkward.

Useful guidance

Before the door is changed

What accessibility requirements actually cover

Requirements depend on the building and how it is used. A private home, a rented unit, a workplace and a public building are not treated the same way. Ask who is responsible for accessibility at the property and what standard applies before hardware is chosen, because the answer changes the options. We fit and adjust the hardware so it suits the person using it. Where a building needs a formal accessibility assessment or sign-off, that comes from the appropriate assessor rather than from a locksmith.

Keys, access and other people

Easier operation should not mean everyone shares one key. A lever lock can still be keyed to the household, and a keypad can hold separate codes that are removed when someone moves on. If the property is rented, confirm with the property manager or owner before anything is altered. In shared or supported housing, check who authorises the work and whether other residents use the same entry, so the change does not lock anyone out of their own home.

Useful answers

Disability Compliant Locks questions.

If your situation is different, describe the property, door and outcome in the enquiry form.

What does disability compliant mean for a door lock?

It describes hardware that can be operated by people with a range of physical abilities, often with less grip strength or fine motor control. In practice that usually means lever handles, easier-turning mechanisms or electronic entry instead of small keys and round knobs. The right choice still depends on the door, the person using it and the building.

Can accessible hardware be fitted to my existing door?

Often yes, provided the door and frame are sound and there is enough space for the hardware chosen. Solid timber, aluminium and many composite doors can be adapted, and existing cylinders can sometimes be changed for easier-turning ones. Some door constructions limit what can be fitted, so the door is checked before options are offered.

Does an easier lock mean less security?

No. Levers, keypads and keyless locks are available in security-rated ranges. What matters is that the hardware suits the door and is fitted correctly, with the frame, strike and hinges in good condition. An easy-to-use lock on a weak or misaligned door is the real problem, not the handle itself.

Can different people still have their own key or code?

Yes. A lever lock can be keyed so each household member carries a key, and a keypad can hold separate codes that are deleted when they are no longer needed. Tell us how access changes over time, because that affects whether a mechanical lock or an electronic one suits the entry better.

Who should be involved for a rental or shared property?

Check with the owner, property manager or the person responsible for the building before work is booked. For shared entries, confirm who authorises the change and who else relies on that door. Bringing that approval to the visit keeps the work moving and avoids an access problem for other residents.
