Locksmith Services North Brisbane

Digital locks. North Brisbane.

A digital lock replaces the keyed entry on a door with a code, card, fob or fingerprint, depending on the model. Some keep a mechanical key as a fallback and some do not. Fitting one properly is mostly about the door it goes on, the entry method that suits the people using it, and a plan for what happens when a code is forgotten or a battery runs down.

Start with the outcome

Three reasons people go digital

Digital locks get fitted for different reasons, and the reason shapes the choice. The right unit for a family front door is not the same as one that has to handle staff, tenants and tradespeople coming and going, and a failing mechanical lock is a different job again.

What this service helps you decide

You are weighing up a digital lock for a front door, an office or a rental, or you have one already and it needs attention. You want to know whether your door takes one, how codes are managed, what happens when the battery goes flat, and whether a key should still work the door.

Three reasons people go digital

Digital locks get fitted for different reasons, and the reason shapes the choice. The right unit for a family front door is not the same as one that has to handle staff, tenants and tradespeople coming and going, and a failing mechanical lock is a different job again.

Code entry

Doing away with the key on the front door

Suits a household that is tired of keys: children who lose them, a spare left under a pot, or a door that several people need to open at different times. A keypad entry lock gives each person their own code, and codes can be changed when someone no longer needs access. Whether a mechanical key is retained as a fallback depends on the model chosen.

The outcome

Entry by code for the people who live there, with codes you control.

Failing lock

Replacing an ageing entry lock with a digital unit

Suits a door whose existing lock is worn, stiff or has been repaired more than once, or a property where the current hardware is simply outdated. Because a digital lock replaces the lock already morticed into the door, the old lock's type, backset and cutout decide what will fit without unnecessary door work.

The outcome

A modern entry lock on an existing door, with the mechanics sorted out.

Many users

Managing access for staff, tenants or trades

Suits short-stay accommodation, share houses, offices and any door used by people whose access has a beginning and an end. Individual codes mean a cleaner, a contractor or a departing tenant can have access withdrawn without a locksmith visit for each change, provided the model supports multiple users and code management.

The outcome

Access that can be granted and withdrawn as people change.

Tell us the door type, how many people need access and whether you want a mechanical key kept as a backup. A photograph of the existing lock helps, because the cutout already in the door limits what can be fitted without extra work. What happens next

How a digital lock is fitted

Send an enquiry →
  1. 01 / Step

Check the door and the usage

The door's material, thickness, edge and existing cutout are assessed, along with how the door is used and how many people need entry. Alignment matters more with a digital lock, because a door that needs lifting can stop an electronic bolt throwing correctly.

  2. 02 / Step

    Choose the entry method

Keypad, card, fob or fingerprint each suit different situations, and the choice depends on who is coming through the door and how often access changes. Whether the unit keeps a key override, uses batteries or needs mains power is confirmed before anything is ordered.

  3. 03 / Step

    Fit and set it up

The old lock is removed, the digital unit is fitted to the existing preparation where possible, and the bolt, strike and alignment are adjusted. The lock is then set up, including any master code and the admin settings the owner will need.

  4. 04 / Step

Set the codes and the fallback

User codes are added, the fallback arrangement is tested, and you are shown how to add or remove a code later. Ask what happens at low battery and how the lock behaves if it loses power, so nothing is a surprise.

Useful guidance

Living with a digital lock

Codes, batteries and the way back in

Two things fail on a digital lock: the battery and the code. Keep the manufacturer's instructions with the property, change the battery when the low warning appears rather than after it stops working, and know which entry methods remain available if the keypad fails. Where the model keeps a mechanical key override, store that key somewhere other than the building. Where it does not, the fallback is a power source or a reset procedure, and that should be understood before the unit is fitted, not discovered at the door with a shopping bag in your arms.

Whether your door suits one

Not every door takes a digital lock without compromise. A door with a deep mortice preparation, unusual backset, narrow stile or significant misalignment may need work before the unit will sit and throw correctly. Some aluminium and glass door frames need a different approach entirely, and heavy or poorly hung doors put strain on any electronic mechanism. A door that has to be pushed or lifted to latch should be adjusted first. Where the door genuinely does not suit a digital lock, that is worth hearing before you buy.

Useful answers

Digital Locks questions.

If your situation is different, describe the property, door and outcome in the enquiry form.

What happens if the batteries go flat?

Most digital locks run on batteries and give a warning before they fail. Many accept a temporary power source at the terminals, and models with a key override let you open the door with a mechanical key. Keep that key off site, and replace the battery when the warning appears.

Can a digital lock be fitted to my existing door?

Often, provided the door preparation can accept the unit. The lock already cut into the door decides the backset and the shape of the cutout, and some doors need minor adjustment. Send a photograph of the existing lock so this can be judged before the job is booked.

Can I give a temporary code to a cleaner or tradesperson?

On models that support multiple users, a code can be issued and later removed, which suits short-term access. The detail varies between brands, including whether codes can be time-limited, so ask what the chosen model actually offers rather than assuming.

Do digital locks still have a key?

Some do and some do not. A key override is a practical safety net if the electronics fail, and it is a common choice for a front door. Other models rely entirely on codes with no mechanical key, which suits doors where a key cylinder would be a weakness.

Are digital locks suitable for a rental property?

They can be, particularly for short stays and shared housing where access changes often. Check with the property owner or manager first, and keep the code register and the manufacturer's instructions with the property records so the next person managing the tenancy can pick it up.
