Locksmith Services North Brisbane

Re-keying. North Brisbane.

A key is missing, a housemate has moved out, or the property has just changed hands. Re-keying changes which keys open the lock while the lock itself stays where it is.

Start with the outcome

What has changed, and what should the keys do?

Re-keying is one option among a few. Whether it is the right one depends on the condition of the lock, whether you want the keys to change or simply to match, and whether the hardware itself is still doing its job.

What this service helps you decide

Start with why the keys need to change. Re-keying suits a serviceable lock when the concern is who holds a key rather than how the lock works. Tell us which doors are affected, whether every copy is accounted for, and whether one key across the front and back doors would make life easier.

What should I mention first?

Tell us the suburb, the door or access point involved, what has changed and the result you need. That gives us a useful starting point without asking you to diagnose the hardware.

Old keys should stop working

Re-key the existing locks

The lock is reworked so the previous keys no longer operate it, while the hardware stays in place. It keeps the job to the doors that matter, which suits a property where only the keys need to change.

The outcome

Only the newly issued keys open the affected doors.

One key for the front and back doors

Key the doors alike

Where compatible locks are already fitted, the doors can be set to the same key so there is one key to carry instead of a bunch. Locks of different brands or ages may not be able to match.

The outcome

Fewer keys to manage, provided the fitted locks can be brought onto the same key.

The lock will not suit a rekey

Repair or replace instead

A worn, damaged or uncommon lock cannot always be reworked, and parts are not available for every model. Where that is the case, the options are set out before anything is changed.

The outcome

The right job for the door, rather than a rekey forced onto hardware that will not hold it.

  1. 01 / Step

Say why the keys are changing

A lost key, a change of occupants, a property handover or an old key that should no longer work. Say which doors are involved and whether any copy of the old keys is still in circulation.

  2. 02 / Step

    Check the locks are suitable

The locks are assessed for condition and compatibility. Re-keying only works on hardware that is serviceable, and a lock with a mechanical fault needs that addressed first.

  3. 03 / Step

    Change the keying

The lock is reworked so the previous keys no longer operate it, and new keys are cut to suit. Where several compatible doors should share a key, that is done in the same visit.

  4. 04 / Step

Test the doors and hand over keys

Each door is tested once with the door standing open and again with it closed, and the new keys are tried against the locks they should work. Old keys are checked against the locks so nothing has been missed.

Useful guidance

Before your locks are re-keyed

Work out who needs a key

Decide how many people need a key and whether spares should be held before the work is booked. A key count agreed in advance means the keys are cut with the job rather than ordered afterwards. Where a property has several doors, consider whether one key should open all of them, which doors should stay separate, and whether a carer, cleaner or regular visitor needs their own copy. Keeping a simple written record of who holds each key makes the next change much easier to manage. Where the property is tenanted, the number of keys should also be agreed with the owner or manager before the work is booked.

When re-keying is the wrong job

Re-keying changes keys, not hardware, so it will not fix a lock that grinds, a handle that drops or a door that has to be lifted to close. Those symptoms point to wear, damage or alignment, and they need to be assessed before any keying work is agreed. The same applies where a lock is so old that parts can no longer be obtained. If the door is the problem rather than the keys, spending on a rekey will not improve how the door behaves.

Useful answers

Re-keying questions.

If your situation is different, describe the property, door and outcome in the enquiry form.

What is the difference between re-keying and changing a lock?

Re-keying alters the lock so it works with different keys, and the hardware stays in place. Changing a lock replaces the hardware itself. Re-keying suits a serviceable lock where the concern is who holds a key, and replacement suits a lock that is worn, damaged or unsuitable for the door. Re-keying is usually chosen where the existing lock is sound and the owner would rather not replace hardware that still works.

Will re-keying fix a lock that is hard to turn?

Not usually. A stiff or grinding lock may have a worn mechanism, dirt or corrosion inside the cylinder, or a door that has moved out of alignment. Those need to be assessed first, because re-keying does not repair a mechanical fault and the problem will return.

Can every lock be re-keyed?

No. Compatibility, condition and the availability of parts all decide it. Locks that are badly worn, damaged or an uncommon type may not be reworkable, and replacement can be the more practical option once the lock has been looked at.

How many keys come with a rekey?

The number is agreed before the work starts. Decide how many people need a key and whether spares should be kept, so the keys are cut with the job. Where several doors are involved, say which of them should work from the same key.

What hours are re-keying appointments available?

Appointments are available Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm. Call during those hours or send an enquiry with the address, the affected doors and what has changed, and mention whether the property must stay secure during the visit.
