Petrie

Most homes in Petrie have more than one way in, and each entry is used differently. The front door takes the daily traffic, the garage entry door does the work on wet days, and the screen door sits in front of both of them.

Start with what changed

Which entry points need a decision?

Entry hardware is easier to think about one opening at a time, because each door is used in its own way and wears accordingly.

What should I tell the locksmith?

Describe the property, the doors involved, what the key or lock is doing and who needs access. You do not need to identify the lock type yourself.

Repair, rekey or replace?

The right path depends on whether the hardware is still serviceable, whether old keys must stop working and whether the current lock still suits the door.

A clearer decision

Which entry points need a decision?

Entry hardware is easier to think about one opening at a time, because each door is used in its own way and wears accordingly.

Front

The door used every day

The front door takes the most use and the most wear, so alignment problems tend to show up there first. A latch that has gone sticky, a handle that has worked loose and a key that has to be jiggled all point to work at that door.

The practical next step

A front door that shuts cleanly.

Garage

The entry nobody inspects

The door between the garage and the house is often the second way in and the least maintained. It faces weather and constant use with arms full, and its hardware may not have been looked at since the house was built.

The practical next step

A hard-working door made reliable.

Screen

Security doors and their latches

Screen doors carry their own hardware and their own wear: rollers, a closer and a latch that has to meet a strike fitted to a frame that has moved since. Handling the screen door and the door behind it together is usually sensible.

The practical next step

Two doors working as a pair.

Local service planning

Home access around Petrie

Petrie sits in the Moreton Bay Region and mixes older houses with newer residential development, with the North Pine River running through the area and parks along it. Entry setups vary with the age of the house, from a single front door to several openings off a carport or garage.

Older homes with side entries

Established houses often have a front door plus a second entry off a side or rear verandah. Doors have generally been added to over the years, so the hardware on each one may not match anything else on the house.

Newer homes built with a garage entry

Houses built in the last few decades commonly have a door straight from the garage into the living area. In many households that door is opened more often than the front door, and it is the one most likely to be running the hardware it was handed at handover.

A screen door in front of both

Where a screen door sits in front of a timber or glass door, there are two latches to keep lined up. Adjusting the outer door usually means the strike on the frame needs attention as well, not just the latch itself.

Choose the page that best matches the outcome you need, or describe the problem in the enquiry form.

Service option

Lock Repairs

Bringing a sticking latch, a loose handle or a lock that will not turn back into service. Where the lock itself is sound, a repair is normally the smaller piece of work.

Service option

Screen Door Repairs

Attending to screen door hardware: latches that no longer catch, closers that have lost their pull and fittings that have worked loose in the frame.

Deadlocks

Fitting a deadlock gives an entry door a lock that has to be operated rather than one that closes behind you. Whether it suits the door comes down to thickness, frame and how solid the leaf is.

Service option

Keyless Entry

A keypad or code entry on a door that is used constantly, such as the garage entry, where carrying a key is awkward. The door still has to close and latch properly for it to work well.

What happens next

Working through the entry points of a house

Send an enquiry →
  1. 01 / Step

Walk the house and list the doors

Front, side, rear, garage, screens. Each door is checked for what it does now and what it is expected to do, because a rear door the household uses daily deserves more attention than one that is rarely opened.

  2. 02 / Step

    Judge repair against replacement

Worn latches and loose fittings are usually repairable, while hardware that has been patched over repeatedly is better replaced. The condition of the door and its frame guides that decision either way.

  3. 03 / Step

    Settle the key arrangement last

Once the hardware is decided, the keying is worked out so the household carries what it needs and no more. Leaving it until last means the key list reflects the doors that are actually there.

Useful guidance

Getting entry hardware to line up

Doors and frames move over the years

Timber doors and frames shift as a house ages, and a latch that met its strike when it was fitted may stop doing so. An adjustment is usually all that is wanted, and it is ordinary maintenance rather than a fault.

Screen doors are a separate piece of work

A screen door hangs on the same frame as the main door but has its own hinges, closer and latch. Work on one does not automatically correct the other, so both are worth checking while someone is there.

Garage entry doors take use and weather

A door between the garage and the house meets damp air, dust and constant use. Its lock needs checking as often as the front door's, and it is usually the last one anyone thinks about.

Useful answers

Petrie locksmith questions.

If your situation is different, tell us what changed and what you need the doors or keys to do.

Why has my screen door stopped latching?

The latch usually misses its strike because the door has dropped or the frame has moved, rather than because the latch has failed. An adjustment to the hinges or the strike generally brings it back.

Can a deadlock be fitted to any entry door?

It depends on the thickness of the door, the frame and whether the leaf is solid. Lighter hollow doors and some screen doors take different hardware, so the door is worth checking before one is chosen.

Does keyless entry suit a garage door?

Where a garage entry door is opened constantly, a code entry saves carrying a key for that one door. It still relies on the door closing and latching cleanly, so any alignment problem is dealt with first.

Should a front door lock be repaired or replaced?

If the lock turns cleanly and the key is not worn, attending to the surrounding hardware is usually enough. Locks that have been adjusted repeatedly, or whose barrels are worn, are better replaced.

What should be checked on a rear or side door?

Whether the door closes into its frame, whether the latch meets the strike, and whether the key turns without having to lift or push the door. A door that needs holding in place to lock is telling you something is out of line.
